In Missouri’s 4th Congressional District, attorney and Air Force veteran Jordan Herrera won the Democratic nomination. Herrera, a former Missouri assistant attorney general, defeated Hartzell Gray, a financially backed democratic socialist candidate, in a seven-way primary.
Gray, a former Kansas City radio host and tenant organizer, attracted national attention for his campaign’s challenge to the Democratic Party’s traditional establishment. Despite raising approximately $250,000, significantly more than Herrera’s $40,000, Gray fell short. His campaign drew support from the Kansas City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, marking its first federal race endorsement.
“The support for Gray stemmed from his refusal to accept donations from corporate and lobbying interests,” a representative from the Kansas City DSA chapter stated.
Gray’s platform included proposals such as universal healthcare, tenant protection legislation, and rent control. He sought to challenge corporate influence in politics, opposing rulings like the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision from 2010.
Despite the financial backing and national attention, Herrara’s victory positions him against Republican Rep. Mark Alford in a district designed to favor the GOP. Gray garnered additional support from social media networks and left-leaning programs, including a notable appearance on Hasan Piker’s Twitch stream, which boosted donations by $30,000.
The Democratic primary also included candidates like former nominee Jeanette Cass and radio host Randy Miller, adding to a crowded field. Gray’s campaign highlighted the influence of Democratic socialism within the party’s evolving landscape, though the upcoming general election will determine if this coalition can overcome the district’s Republican leanings.
