Capybaras Visit Brazilian State Legislature

Brazilian lawmakers ready to conduct official business were unexpectedly joined by a group of capybaras at the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly in Cuiabá on July 30. These uninvited guests caught attention as they explored the premises before a scheduled vote.

Video footage captured by legislative staffer Nayara Bueno showed the capybaras moving calmly through the building, while workers attempted to guide them outside.

The workers made efforts to steer the capybaras away from the legislative building.

The capybaras visit the legislature frequently, so locals have grown accustomed to their presence. As reported by Bueno to The Associated Press, their occasional appearances are not disruptive and have caused no damage.

The legislative building’s vicinity to a local park, home to various wildlife, offers easy access to these animals. Capybaras, native to South America, live near wetlands and are social creatures often found in groups. They can weigh up to 175 pounds, making them the largest rodents in the world.
