The SpaceX rocket carrying two lunar landers collided with the moon as scientists predicted, following a year-long drift off course. Observers did not witness the actual 5,400 mph (8,700 kph) impact, but a telescope in Chile detected a debris plume, indicating the collision occurred.
Space tracking experts said the rocket’s collision was inevitable. This incident adds to concerns about lunar debris, especially with increased activities from the U.S. and China aiming to send astronauts to the moon. Previous cases include a Chinese rocket striking the moon in 2022.
Julianna Scheiman of SpaceX stated that solar activity and gravitational forces unintentionally directed the rocket toward the moon. She confirmed efforts with NASA to prevent future mishaps. Carl Schmidt of Boston University shared his observation team’s evidence of the crash, noting a sodium and lithium plume observed by the Very Large Telescope.

Retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell observed the rocket’s trajectory toward the moon. Although witnessing the dust plume from Earth is challenging, space-based instruments provide better chances of observation. Dutch scientist Marco Langbroek attempted to spot the impact without success, noting the difficulty involved.
Confirmation of the newly formed crater will await visuals from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, expected to provide images next week. The rocket involved was the Falcon’s upper stage, which launched two private lunar landers on January 15, 2025. Despite the collision, the Blue Ghost lander achieved a successful landing, marking a first for private spacecraft.
The moon’s prominence in space exploration is increasing, with numerous robotic missions planned to establish a permanent lunar base. NASA partners with SpaceX and Blue Origin for future lunar landers. SpaceX’s Starship progresses with test flights, whereas Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lander has yet to launch.
Future missions, including Artemis III’s docking rehearsal, are scheduled for next year, with astronauts targeting a lunar landing by 2028. McDowell emphasized the growing activity near the moon, suggesting that impacts causing extensive dust dispersal will not remain tolerable.
