Boston Red Sox’s Search for a Shortstop Continues as Trevor Story Prepares for Return

The Boston Red Sox actively searched for a new shortstop during the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Trevor Story, a top-paid player for the organization, observed their pursuit and felt relieved when they couldn’t acquire another shortstop. This provides Story another chance to secure his role in the team.

“There was speculation, for sure. I saw it,” Story remarked on Wednesday, based on a transcript by Chris Cotillo from MassLive. “But that’s the business side of the game. I can’t control that, especially when I’m not playing. It unfolded in this way. I’m obviously happy and excited to get back, contribute, and be part of this incredible turnaround.”

The Boston Red Sox showed interest in Miami Marlins’ Otto Lopez, Washington Nationals’ CJ Abrams, and Cincinnati Reds’ Elly De La Cruz. Ultimately, they didn’t secure any deals with these teams and directed their focus towards former Baltimore Orioles catcher, Adley Rutschman.

Currently, the Red Sox face a shortstop gap due to Story’s extended absence after sports hernia surgery. The team has relied on players like Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard, and Tsung Che-Cheng to fill the gap. Once Story returns, he is expected to regain his daily position, owing to his leadership, reliable defense, and offensive strength.

Story anticipates a return, as he mentioned that a rehab assignment is upcoming. “We’re reassessing at the end of the week to evaluate how everything went and look forward,” Story explained. “I’m nearing top speed now. The focus is on how my body responds.”

The Red Sox eagerly await having an additional option on the field. However, Story must perform to the high standards set in 2025. Only by doing so will he truly earn his position back.
