Players experienced a challenging day with unusual mistakes during recent women’s basketball games. Both New Mexico State and Northwestern State saw players make layups in the wrong basket, leading to unexpected highlights.
New Mexico State’s Game
During a match against Southern Utah, New Mexico State’s Emma Christiano accidentally scored on her own team’s basket. This mishap occurred with only 20 seconds left on the clock, making it a crucial moment as Southern Utah was leading.
As Christiano intercepted an inbound pass and confidently made a layup, the play-by-play announcer initially thought New Mexico State had taken the lead. Contrary to expectations, Southern Utah maintained a three-point advantage.
The situation turned around for the Aggies thanks to Stacy Chovino, who scored the final two baskets. Her last-second layup secured a 64-63 win for New Mexico State, bringing relief to Christiano after her earlier mistake.
Northwestern State’s Game
Earlier on the same day, Northwestern State faced Arkansas. In the first quarter, Karma Wynn received a bounce pass under her own basket. With no defense in sight, she made a layup into the wrong hoop, giving Arkansas an increased lead.
This error contributed to Northwestern State’s struggle, as they found themselves trailing by six points. Eventually, they lost the game with a score of 89-59.
Both incidents served as reminders of how quickly the dynamics on the court can shift due to simple yet significant errors. These moments will likely be remembered in basketball discussions for a while.
