The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of TV host Savannah Guthrie, has taken a new turn. A neighbor in the Catalina Foothills reported seeing FBI agents searching the brush behind Guthrie’s home, approaching the six-month mark of her unsolved case.
Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson stated that no task force investigators returned to the area recently. However, the neighbor recognized faces from prior law enforcement actions related to the case. The FBI has not commented on these sightings yet.
The neighbor, living nearby, observed agents meticulously searching the desert brush. Guthrie is believed to have been forcibly taken from her home on February 1, according to official reports.
Investigation Developments
Bob Krygier, a retired lieutenant from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, suggests several reasons for investigators’ return: new leads, additional tips, or possible evidence relocation due to weather changes.
Krygier explained to Fox News that factors such as heavy rains during Tucson’s monsoon season might have altered the landscape, potentially revealing or relocating previous evidence. “Water has changed the environment significantly,” he noted.
Environmental Challenges
Floodwaters can rise dramatically, sometimes up to 12 feet, influencing the examination of the scene. These conditions pose a challenge to ongoing searches and evidence recovery.
The Santa Cruz River, which experiences massive flooding, can swiftly carry away not only natural debris but also cars and other large objects, making investigations in these conditions arduous.
Current Status of Inquiry
Despite the challenging circumstances, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos affirmed last week that active leads are being pursued, with tens of thousands of video reviews ongoing. The case is not considered cold by authorities.
Recently, the sheriff’s office released purported ransom notes related to the case, seeking public help to identify the sender’s distinctive linguistic traits.
