Las Vegas Raiders: A New Era with Fernando Mendoza

The Las Vegas Raiders made a strategic choice by selecting Fernando Mendoza, a Heisman Trophy winner from the Indiana Hoosiers, in the recent NFL Draft. The team sees him as a key player for their future. However, the question of when Mendoza will assume the starting quarterback role remains open, especially with the addition of veteran Kirk Cousins this offseason.

In a conversation with ESPN’s Dan Graziano, Kirk Cousins shared insights about the dynamics of the quarterback room and the ongoing competition during training camp. He remarked, “Good quarterback room. We’ve enjoyed just working together as a group. We have good dialogue every day. I think the organization is positioned well, having drafted Fernando.” Cousins added, “I’m gonna try to hold him off as long as I can. We’ll see how it goes up ahead.”

Cousins acknowledged his dual role: both competing with and supporting Mendoza. As other teams have done with rookie quarterbacks, having an experienced player like Cousins start can ease Mendoza into the NFL.

According to head coach Klint Kubiak, Cousins is currently positioned as the starter for training camp. “He’s the guy, and he deserves it because he’s played really good football. But I want Fernando and Aidan [O’Connell] to push him,” Kubiak stated. This competition aims to strengthen the team’s overall performance.

Cousins’ enthusiasm for being part of the Raiders is evident. This marks the fourth team he has played for since his NFL debut in 2012. A seasoned Pro Bowler, Cousins brings invaluable experience that can guide Mendoza in his professional growth. “Honestly, it’s exceeded my expectations. You know, I tried to get my mind right for living on Mars when I moved here, and it’s been great. It’s sunny every day. Great culture here. I like my teammates. I like the coaches. I like the system. So, I’m excited now; we just gotta get the ball right and go win some games,” Cousins expressed.

Looking ahead, sportsbooks have set the Raiders’ win total at over 5.5 games. Achieving six wins would double their performance from last season, which secured the No. 1 pick leading to Mendoza’s acquisition. The timeline for Mendoza’s rise to starting quarterback remains uncertain, with Cousins presently higher on the depth chart.
