NYC Mayor Mamdani Discusses Potential Tax Campaign for Wealthy

New York City’s democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani avoided direct answers Thursday regarding rumored plans to initiate a public campaign for tax increases on wealthy New Yorkers and corporations. Reports suggest Mamdani aims to build public support after Labor Day for similar proposals previously dismissed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in early 2026. This initiative is expected before the New York Legislature reconvenes in Albany in January 2027 and alongside Hochul’s re-election campaign, as reported by The New York Post.

In an interview with Fox 5 New York, Mamdani repeatedly skirted questions about the possible campaign, only noting that discussions would occur after the November election. When asked if he had discussed this with Hochul, Mamdani opted to highlight the introduction of 2,000 free child care slots for New Yorkers, achieved through policy efforts.

“The governor and I communicate constantly, and I value her partnership. Without her, we couldn’t have announced that over 5,000 New Yorkers applied for these 2,000 free child care seats,” Mamdani stated. “I’m thrilled about our plan to expand this to 12,000 seats and the work ahead.”

When pressed on whether the Democratic Socialists of America would support the proposed campaign this fall, Mamdani again did not answer directly, stating his current focus is on present matters.

Mamdani expressed, “My focus is where we are now, making sure New Yorkers are safe during the heat wave and ready for the school year. Discussions about post-November plans are for later.”

When questioned if he intended to launch a campaign to tax the wealthy before the November election, Mamdani replied, “I’ve been discussing the current situation with the governor and my team. Future conversations will happen later.”

Mamdani had previously proposed tax hikes to bridge the city’s multibillion-dollar budget gap, an idea Hochul had not supported. His plan suggested raising personal income tax rates for those earning $1 million or more, which could generate about $3 billion annually, alongside increased corporate taxes.

As an alternative, Hochul and Mamdani approved the state’s first pied-à-terre tax, a surcharge on high-value second homes, enacted in May 2026. Officials estimate this measure could generate $500 million annually.

Mamdani credited his May 2026 executive budget for closing a $12 billion budget gap through strategic savings, investment initiatives, collaboration with Albany, and new tax revenues, including the pied-à-terre tax.
