Recent U.S. intelligence findings indicate a possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin launching an attack on a NATO member state within the coming years. This move aims to undermine the NATO alliance established post-World War II and test Article 5, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.
Previously, U.S. assessments considered it unlikely for Putin to target a NATO country while engaged in Ukraine. However, given Ukraine’s advancements, Putin appears to be seeking a strategic victory, as concerns increase in the U.S. and Europe over his actions.
Instances like the May drone strike on a Romanian apartment and recent missile landings in Poland, a NATO country, highlight these threats.
Article 5 of NATO states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
This intelligence proposes possible limited scale attacks, including cyberattacks or minor land incursions, particularly in Baltic states or Poland, between fall 2026 and 2029.
Heather Conley, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, explained to the Journal, “It’s crucial for Russia to question NATO’s credibility and distance the U.S. from its allies.”
Concurrently, reports claim that U.S. munitions reserves face depletion due to commitments in Ukraine and Iran conflicts. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell dismissed these allegations, assuring sufficient arsenal and readiness for any required action at the President’s command.
The possibility of land incursion remains low due to Article 5’s activation risk, but responses to cyberattacks remain uncertain.
NATO, blamed on Russia for recent missile events in Poland, maintains communication with Warsaw, as noted by Col. Martin O’Donnell, NATO spokesman. O’Donnell stated, “We consistently prepare for numerous scenarios, demonstrating deterrence and defense readiness.”
