Challenges Facing the Supreme Court’s Public Perception

The Supreme Court is encountering a significant issue as it prepares to begin its new term: a decline in public approval. According to a July Gallup poll, only 33 percent of Americans approve of the Court’s performance, marking the lowest approval rating in the poll’s 26-year history.

Another poll conducted by Marquette Law School presents a slightly better picture, though still concerning. It indicates that 47 percent of respondents approve of the Court’s actions, while 53 percent disapprove. This ongoing decline suggests a broader trend of diminishing trust in institutions across the United States.

Despite these challenges, Americans generally continue to support the decisions made by the Court. However, the overall dip in institutional trust presents ongoing challenges for the function and perception of the Supreme Court in the broader political and social landscape.
