David Thalman and Francesca Warick were located off Washington Island on Monday morning, after being missing for the weekend, according to a press statement from the Door County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Island Police Department.

Washington Island sits opposite the Door Peninsula, requiring kayakers to navigate the turbulent Death’s Door strait. This area has a grim reputation, with hundreds of shipwrecks reported since the 19th century.

Authorities handling the case do not believe the couple wore life jackets during their trip. The Door County Sheriff’s Office assumed control of the search, now transitioned into a recovery operation since Sunday.
