White Sox Manager’s Mistake Costs Team Against Guardians

Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable has impressed in his first season with the team, showing skill and leadership. Despite these moments, a recent game against the Cleveland Guardians highlighted a costly error. The White Sox fell 8-2, with a key mistake early in the game affecting the outcome.

During the first inning, White Sox pitcher Noah Schultz loaded the bases after facing just four batters, prompting a visit from pitching coach Zach Bove. After a two-run single by Angel Martinez, Venable returned to the mound to discuss an appeal but forgot a crucial rule. By official rule 5.10(l), only one mound visit per pitcher per inning is allowed without removing the pitcher. As a result, Venable was forced to pull Schultz from the game prematurely.

“Yeah, just an inexcusable mistake by me where we had an appeal play that we wanted to execute, and in the urgency of trying to make that happen, just totally lost that we had visited,” Venable acknowledged post-game, according to MLB.com.

This misstep came after a 13-inning loss the night before, leaving the bullpen tired. David Sandlin took over for Schultz and delivered 5 1/3 innings on 96 pitches. Though surprised by his early entry, Sandlin adapted quickly, attributing readiness to limited warm-up opportunities.

The White Sox recorded their fourth consecutive loss, marking a new low for the season. Their opponents, the Guardians, were closely trailing in the standings. The teams faced off again on Saturday, hoping for a different result.
