Kristaps Porzingis has announced he will be taking a break from basketball. The Golden State Warriors center shared on Friday that he is stepping away indefinitely to manage his health problems.
Porzingis expressed his excitement for the season. However, he disclosed that his body did not respond well as he prepared to play. He stated, “I’m doing good, but I know what it takes and I’m not where I want to be to perform at the level that I expect from myself. At this point, I’ve made the decision to prioritize my health and step away from the game I love.”
This decision comes as Porzingis deals with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a condition causing symptoms like dizziness and fatigue. These symptoms have kept him off the court, including during the Warriors’ training camp earlier this season.
Porzingis addressed online speculation about his health and rumors fueled by “internet doctors.” He tweeted, “Hello people, I’m working with doctors and experts to figure out how to be fully back to good health asap.” He assured fans that he is improving and remains optimistic about his recovery.
According to reports, the Warriors have stopped paying Porzingis his $20 million salary amid this health saga. League sources confirmed that Porzingis is not contesting the halted payments, and the NBA Players’ Association has no plans to challenge the decision.
Despite playing only 74 games in the last two seasons, the Warriors signed Porzingis to a two-year, $40 million contract extension. Since joining the NBA with the New York Knicks in 2015, Porzingis has earned over $253 million.
Porzingis expressed gratitude towards his team, family, and supporters. He is working closely with the Warriors to find a suitable solution as he focuses on his health.
