CNN’s Anonymous Sourcing in Iran War Coverage Challenged

CNN maintained its stance on the accuracy of its reporting regarding the Iran war after retired Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt questioned the network’s use of anonymous sources. CNN responded to these allegations by affirming the validity of their reporting.

Joseph Holstead, public affairs adviser to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not comment on the details of CNN’s report or Kimmitt’s criticism. He agreed with Fox News Digital’s assessment that CNN’s sources lacked direct knowledge of the described conversations.

Kimmitt criticized CNN’s reliance on unnamed sources during a Saturday interview. He challenged the accuracy of information about negotiation processes detailed in the network’s report. CNN did not answer Fox News Digital’s inquiries about evaluating its anonymous sources or the validity of Kimmitt’s criticisms.

Kimmitt stated, “I read the CNN article and noticed quotes from unnamed sources indicating there were no negotiations ongoing, which proved incorrect.”

By the time Kimmitt’s comments were made, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance had publicly confirmed ongoing negotiations. Trump disclosed his direct involvement, while Vance shared that American officials were discussing reestablishing oil and gas passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Republican National Committee’s spokesperson, Natalie Baldassarre, defended President Trump’s approach, describing his policies as effective in preventing Iran from advancing its nuclear agenda—a stance widely supported by voters.

CNN’s report included a response from Joseph Holstead, who dismissed anonymous characterizations of private discussions. He refrained from divulging specifics of Caine’s conversations with senior officials. Holstead emphasized a policy of not commenting on agenda-driven anonymous portrayals by uninformed sources.

Kimmitt expanded his criticism beyond sourcing, noting that the U.S. had not achieved its primary objectives regarding Iran’s nuclear program, missile capability, or regional proxy support.

Omar Jimenez from CNN remarked on the preference for official sources to attach their names to information, echoing the network’s reporting standards.

Meanwhile, Fox News Digital highlighted the Trump administration’s ongoing negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicated that U.S. Central Command had halted attacks following a streak of strikes on Iranian military targets.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Kimmitt but had yet to receive a response.
