Representative Max Miller’s Campaign Under Scrutiny Amid Abuse Allegations

Representative Max Miller’s reelection campaign for Ohio’s 7th Congressional District is facing intensified scrutiny following a missed deadline that locks the embattled Republican congressman onto the November ballot. Despite mounting calls for his resignation within the GOP, Miller has remained steadfast against stepping down, even amidst allegations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno—claims he has persistently denied.

The pressure from prominent Republicans is notable as concerns swell regarding the party’s ability to retain the seat. Miller was urged to withdraw before the state’s replacement deadline, which would have permitted local GOP officials to substitute him with another candidate. However, the Saturday deadline passed without action from Miller, leaving party leaders with little opportunity for an alternate nomination.

Mounting Republican Criticism and Calls for Resignation

Republican criticism of Miller is on the rise. Indiana Senator Jim Banks has publicly declared that Miller should step down if the allegations are proven true, expressing that they are “deeply troubling” and pose risks to the Republican-held House seat.

“It’s heartbreaking to see all of this play out publicly. If he’s endangering his seat in Congress, he should drop out,” Banks stated, emphasizing the potential impact on the party’s efforts to maintain its majority.

Banks isn’t alone in distancing himself from Miller. GOP Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, whose daughter was formerly married to Miller, has stated Miller is “a danger” to his daughter, highlighting character concerns.

Ohio Senator Jon Husted echoed these sentiments, advising Miller to resign and focus on his family, asserting this would be a decision he would likely reflect upon as the correct course of action.

Montana Senator Tim Sheehy criticized Miller harshly, calling him a “degenerate sociopath.” This followed accusations that Miller denied his young daughter access to her favorite toy, a claim Miller disputes.

House Ethics Committee Investigation Begins

The controversy has attracted national attention, including intervention from party officials concerned about potentially losing a favorable district. President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Miller, communicated with him about the difficulty of winning reelection given the allegations, though Miller remains defiant.

Trump indicated he would investigate the matter further, stating, “So far, it’s accusations. I’ll be looking at it.” Subsequent actions include the House Ethics Committee launching an investigation into the allegations against Miller.

House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but stated leadership would withhold judgment until the investigation concludes.

Miller, denying all accusations, frames them as originating from a contentious divorce and custody conflict. Determined to pursue reelection, he insists he will clear his name, seeking an ethics review, and highlighting that no criminal charges have emerged against him.

With no viable replacement on the ballot, Republicans face a challenging scenario, acknowledging the growing risk to their efforts to preserve the House majority.
