An Iconic Musician’s Journey Through Pain and Renewal

Roland Orzabal, star of the 1980s band Tears for Fears, has candidly discussed the challenging final years of his marriage to Caroline, who died from an alcohol-related illness. In his new memoir, Welcome to Your Life, Orzabal shares his experiences and emotional struggles during this period.

The Truth Behind the Memoir

The musician, renowned for hits like “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Shout,” decided to be open about his past, as he believes others may be experiencing similar challenges. Orzabal revealed that although it seemed harsh, he needed to find a path forward for himself.

Decades-Long Struggle

Orzabal met his first wife Caroline when they were teenagers, marrying in Bath, England, in 1982. Their marriage endured strains over the years, exacerbated by Orzabal’s increasing focus on his music career and the couple’s drifting apart. By the mid-1990s, they faced serious marital issues and sought counseling, but remained together.

In the late 2000s, their routine involved heavy nightly drinking, which began to impact Caroline’s health around 2011. Initial signs were mistakenly attributed to menopause, but eventually doctors identified alcohol as the root cause. Orzabal, however, found this difficult to accept at first.

A New Beginning

In 2016, during a concert tour stop in Colorado, Orzabal met Emily Rath, a writer and photographer. Despite being married, he felt an instant connection. He described this as falling in love with someone entirely different from his wife.

Orzabal felt torn, as his feelings for Rath developed while Caroline’s health deteriorated. He acknowledged feeling divided between his growing personal desires and the chaotic situation at home.

A Difficult Decision

Roland Orzabal eventually chose to pursue a new life, despite the agony and guilt it created. His wife died in 2017 after a long battle with alcohol-related dementia.

Reflecting on this period, Orzabal stated, “There’s this madness that comes with grief,” highlighting the guilt and internal negotiation he faced during his journey to self-forgiveness.

Life After Loss

After Caroline’s death, Orzabal battled an Ambien addiction, entering a rehabilitation center in Colorado in 2019. This helped him heal and forgive himself.

In 2020, he married Emily Rath, and they had a daughter named Eula in 2025. Orzabal praises Emily as a vital support, reflecting on a belief that Caroline would understand the shifts in his life if viewing from a higher perspective.
