Trump Wins Legal Round Against BBC

2 hours ago 0

On Monday, President Donald Trump secured a legal win when a district judge allowed him to amend his complaint in the lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The decision permits Trump’s legal team to modify their original complaint.

Trump initiated the lawsuit in December, alleging defamation and violations of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, seeking a total of $10 billion. The United States District Judge, Roy K. Altman, sided with Trump and allowed the amendment, marking the BBC’s motion to dismiss as “moot.”

Trump’s legal team’s spokesman called the ruling a “major win,” criticizing the BBC for allegedly doctoring Trump’s speech to interfere with the 2024 Presidential Election. They emphasized holding the BBC accountable for what they termed malicious actions.

The BBC came under scrutiny due to its “Panorama” documentary about Trump’s Jan. 6 speech. The film titled “Trump: A Second Chance?” appeared to splice together Trump’s comments, suggesting he had told supporters to “fight like hell” before the Capitol riot. Allegations about the documentary’s editing integrity emerged from a whistleblower dossier reviewed by Michael Prescott, a communications advisor.

According to the whistleblower, the documentary misleadingly combined separate comments by Trump, giving a false impression of his intent. In truth, Trump’s address encouraged supporters to “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,” and only later did he use the “fight like hell” phrase regarding election integrity.

This controversy led to the resignations of BBC CEO Deborah Turness and Director-General Tim Davie. President Trump continues to seek $10 billion in damages, focusing on personal reputational harm. The amended complaint must be filed by Monday, with the BBC having the right to contest the new allegations.
