Colombia Earthquake: Over 100 Dead and Thousands Missing

2 hours ago 0

Colombia is grappling with the aftermath of a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the western region, affecting cities like Cali, Quibdo, and Pereira. The earthquake, which occurred on Monday, resulted in at least 111 fatalities and left many more trapped under the debris of destroyed buildings.

Extensive Damage and Loss

Search and rescue operations began early Tuesday across dozens of cities and towns. Approximately 1,600 buildings sustained damage or collapsed. Families have actively used citizen-run websites to post information about missing loved ones. By the end of Monday, reports indicated more than 2,700 people were missing.

President Abelardo de la Espriella, sworn in just days before the catastrophe, faces a significant challenge. He is known for his strong stance against criminal groups. His immediate actions include a visit to Quibdo, the capital of Choco, one of the most affected regions. He assured residents that Choco would no longer be regarded as ‘the land of the forgotten’.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Responders have been working tirelessly since the morning light over Choco. The region’s challenging terrain—accessible mainly by boat, through thick jungle, or by air—complicates rescue efforts. Soldiers, rescue workers, and volunteers are working hand in hand, methodically removing rubble by hand. Search dogs and engineers are also part of the comprehensive response strategy.

De la Espriella announced he had mobilized the military and police forces to aid in the recovery and rescue operations. He confirmed the provision of rental subsidies for those whose homes were damaged, ensuring temporary shelter while repairs are underway.

Community Efforts and Hope

The local communities have shown incredible resilience amid the crisis. Photos capture both the tragedy and the strength of those searching for survivors and clearing rubble. Residents have been seen working alongside police, carrying survivors from the debris. The earthquake’s impact extends beyond the immediate loss, affecting the lives of thousands still searching for their loved ones.
