Carmine Agnello, grandson of late mob boss John Gotti and former reality TV star, has reported to federal prison after an attempt to delay his sentence. Agnello, known from the series ‘Growing Up Gotti,’ was sentenced for fraud charges related to obtaining $1.1 million in loans under false pretenses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that Agnello began his 15-month prison term at the Federal Correctional Institution Fairton in New Jersey.
Initially scheduled to report in July, Agnello received a delay until September 18. He cited plans to donate a kidney to his mother, Victoria Gotti, as a reason for the postponement. U.S. District Court Judge Nusrat Choudhury allowed the delay, assuming surgery by August 10. However, when medical conditions delayed the surgery indefinitely, Agnello was ordered to surrender immediately.
Victoria Gotti, suffering from chronic kidney disease, requires careful treatment of infections before a transplant can proceed. Agnello’s lawyer, Robert Beltrani, argued for more time, stating, ‘Carmine is a great match for Ms. Gotti.’ However, prosecutors, led by Joseph Nocella, opposed further delays, citing ongoing medical uncertainties.
Prosecutors accused Agnello of filing fraudulent claims to secure loans for his company, Crown Auto Parts & Recycling LLC. They allege he misrepresented his business details and prior criminal record, misusing funds on ventures like a $420,000 cryptocurrency investment. His company had ceased operations prior to his loan application.
Carmine Agnello and his brothers gained fame as teenagers in ‘Growing Up Gotti,’ showcasing their family life on Long Island. His grandfather, John Gotti, was infamous in the New York crime scene and was known as the ‘Teflon Don’ for evading several legal convictions. John Gotti died in federal prison in 2002.
The New Jersey prison where Agnello is serving time has a history of notable inmates. Not long ago, former New York Congressman George Santos served a brief period of his seven-year sentence there before receiving clemency from President Donald Trump.
