Economist Amanda Janoo has emerged victorious over Aly Richards, the former CEO of a child advocacy organization, clinching the Democratic nomination. Richards had significant backing from former Democratic Governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin.
Phil Scott ran unopposed in his party, securing the Republican nomination for governor. If he wins the upcoming election, this would be his sixth consecutive two-year term. Vermont, along with New Hampshire, holds gubernatorial elections every two years, unique among the states. Should Scott complete another term, he will surpass Howard Dean as the longest-serving governor in the region.
Scott, known for his moderate Republican stance, has often criticized former President Donald Trump. During the 2024 election cycle, Scott endorsed Nikki Haley and voted for Kamala Harris in the general election, diverging from party lines.
The Democrats face a challenging battle to unseat Scott, despite Vermont’s general Democratic leaning. In his 2024 re-election, Scott secured an impressive 73% of the vote, building on his 69% share from 2022.
