Less than a week after facing a gunshot wound and losing a leg while protecting deputies, Florida K-9 Ace made an inspiring comeback to the sheriff’s office on Tuesday. Ace, a 7-year-old German shepherd serving with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office since March 2020, was injured during an attempt to arrest Angel Bowers, 27.
Authorities stated Bowers fired multiple shots at deputies who sought to arrest him for failing to appear in court. Deputies returned fire, resulting in Bowers’ death.
“Ace protected the deputies from Bowers but was shot, resulting in massive blood loss,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
Ace’s handler, Deputy Natalie Oestreich, provided immediate first aid and transported him to safety. He was initially stabilized at Parkway Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Lakeland before being flown to the Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch for surgery. The veterinarians conducted a prolonged operation to amputate Ace’s left front leg.
After surgery, the sheriff’s office shared a video showing Ace enthusiastically interacting with deputies before walking out on his own, marked by applause.
Two days later, Ace revisited the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Judd expressed his pride, saying, “Ace and Natalie stood between good and evil, saving three deputies’ lives.” Ace playfully displayed his enthusiasm by biting the sheriff’s finger.
Deputy Oestreich will spend recovery time with Ace before her return to duty. Although Ace will retire from active service, Sheriff Judd encouraged him to “enjoy your retirement.” The sheriff’s office acknowledged Ace as a hero in a social media post.
Polk Sheriff’s Charities Inc. has initiated a K-9 fund to support Ace’s continued care. Donations can be made through the organization’s website.
