Gov. Spanberger Faces Backlash at Virginia Fiddle Convention

Democratic Governor Abigail Spanberger recently attended an event at the nearly century-old fiddling convention in southwestern Virginia. Her visit drew criticism, with comparisons to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Clinton faced backlash in 2016 when she mentioned carrying hot sauce, a comment seen as pandering to certain voter groups.

Del. Wren Williams, a Republican representing Galax where the 90th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention occurred, voiced his opinion to Fox News Digital. He felt proud of the constituents who expressed their views about Governor Spanberger’s visit peacefully yet firmly.

Williams noted that Spanberger’s appearance was perceived as an attempt to appeal to rural residents who oppose several of her policies, such as a halted redistricting effort and controversial legislative measures labeled “bad bills” by Richmond Republicans. Williams compared her actions unfavorably to Clinton’s past pandering moment, stating, “nobody was buying it.”

During the event, Spanberger and her public safety chief, Galax native Stanley Meador, were met with boos. Meador, previously an FBI special agent in charge of the Richmond Field Office, introduced the governor. This reaction was seen as justified by Williams, who stated that people in Galax and Carroll County feel neglected by Spanberger.

Williams highlighted the constituents’ concerns, stating that they felt politically disarmed by being redistricted into a single congressional district, which they perceived as a step towards Spanberger’s national Democratic ambitions.

House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore emphasized that the local community is vocal about their values and way of life. He criticized Spanberger’s policies, citing attempts to alter their congressional influence, challenge Second Amendment rights, and promote green energy policies that he claims are unaffordable for locals.

Former Attorney General Jason Miyares, involved in the “Vote No” coalition, remarked that the crowd’s reaction was expected, labeling Spanberger’s effort as a failed power grab that included gerrymandering and tax increases.

Comments on social media echoed these sentiments, with users stating that rural Virginia’s discontent reflects the widespread opposition to Spanberger’s policies. Criticism often highlighted the contrast between Democratic strength in urban areas and the strong opposition in rural regions.

Despite the criticism, some observers acknowledged Spanberger’s willingness to visit Galax and Carroll County, areas where she has limited electoral support. Democratic strategist Matt Royer noted that her presence at the event demonstrated a willingness to engage despite political challenges.
