Trump and Harp Sued Over Truth Social Subscriber Program

1 day ago 0

President Donald Trump and White House aide Natalie Harp face a lawsuit regarding a Truth Social subscriber program. This program offers users early access to official government posts for $100,000 a month. Filed on September 17 by watchdog groups American Oversight and Campaign for Accountability, the lawsuit alleges that the program denies public access to government information in a timely manner, violating the First and Fifth Amendments and federal law. Newsweek reached out to the White House and Trump Media & Technology Group via email.

Understanding Truth API

The “Truth API” program, initiated on August 1, offers subscribers real-time access to posts from select Truth Social accounts, including those of government officials. Subscription costs stand at $100,000 per month or $60,000 per month with a three-year commitment. An API, which stands for application programming interface, allows different software systems to communicate and exchange data. Truth API enables paying subscribers to access a direct, real-time feed of posts from specific Truth Social accounts.

Accounts involved include those of Trump, White House staff, Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and FBI Director Kash Patel. These officials are mentioned in the lawsuit along with several federal agencies and White House offices. Harp is named as a defendant as she is reportedly the primary White House staffer aiding Trump in posting on his Truth Social account, as per the lawsuit.

Impact of ‘Market-Moving’ Information

The lawsuit highlights that Trump and other officials often use Truth Social for major policy updates and official actions. Examples cited include Trump’s January announcement of a U.S. strike against Venezuela and updates on the Iran conflict. Kevin McGurn, interim CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group, stated in a July press release that markets are influenced by Truth Social posts. He added that the company expects Truth API to be a consistent revenue source.

The complaint stresses that information disseminated via Truth Social can significantly impact the global economy. Truth API subscribers gain early access to potentially market-moving data. McGurn mentioned on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that the number of Truth API subscribers was in the “mid-teens.” Depending on the tier, the service potentially generated over $1 million in revenue in a month, more than all sources combined in the first quarter of 2026, the complaint notes.

The lawsuit points out that Trump and various officials have financial interests in the company, creating a potential incentive for Trump to make the service appealing to subscribers through early release of important information. It encourages officials and agencies to follow suit.

Prior to his second term, Trump transferred his shares in Trump Media & Technology Group to the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, which owns about 41.4 percent of the shares, valued at over $1 billion. Trump is the sole beneficiary of the trust, as noted in the lawsuit.
