The Colorado Buffaloes allowed fans a glimpse of their 2026 football roster during an open practice on Wednesday. However, the team implemented strict rules to ensure no details about the session were leaked. There were no reports, recordings, or media coverage allowed.

Deion Sanders, the Buffaloes’ head coach, invited fans and media to view the practice with a set list of conditions to prevent competitors from gaining insight into his strategies for the upcoming season. According to an email from Sanders, observers were instructed, “This practice is open for viewing purposes only. It is closed for all reporting, recording, and documentation purposes… Nothing observed at practice may be reported, published, posted, broadcast or otherwise shared in any form, on any platform, at any time.”

Security measures at the practice were comparable to high-profile events. Prohibited items included cell phones, tablets, cameras, audio recorders, and any recording-capable devices, including smart glasses. Fans even had to surrender their phones before entering the practice area, retrieving them only after the event concluded.

Spectators could only rely on memory to recall player formations and team dynamics. Even then, sharing this information was against team rules. Colorado emphasized, “No note-taking of any kind—written, typed, dictated, or otherwise.”

Despite these restrictions, fan reactions were mostly positive, with many appreciating the chance to attend the at-capacity event. Fans interested in seeing event highlights could follow Deion Sanders Jr.’s social accounts, where some content was shared. Most programs allow media limited access, so the opening was a rare opportunity for those covering the Buffaloes.

In a field known for its secrecy, coaches often protect their practices as though they’re state secrets. Alabama’s Nick Saban, for example, restricts even nearby apartment residents from sharing any observations of the practice field.

For reporters, Colorado’s policies meant reporting was off-limits. The school’s warning was clear: “Violations of these guidelines may result in removal from the facility, revocation of credentials, and restriction of future access for the individual and the outlet, consistent with CU Athletics media policies.” This underscored the serious nature of compliance.
