Southeast Faces Near-Record Heat Dome

Major heat is predicted to hit the Southeast and Florida due to a near-record heat dome developing in the region. This weather condition is expected to commence over the weekend and may persist through the following week.

A heat dome is a phenomenon where an area of high pressure traps hot air underneath it. According to the American Meteorological Society, this process prevents clouds and rain, causing temperatures to rise significantly. The current situation may break monthly records due to the intensity of this high pressure. Consequently, numerous temperature records, both high and low, could be surpassed.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts that over 30 million people will experience ‘extreme’ heat, with an additional 50 million facing ‘major’ heat conditions.

Heat conditions are set to intensify later in the week, peaking over the weekend. By Sunday, states including Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, southern Illinois, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida will be under the heat dome influence. Florida’s temperatures are projected to reach the mid-90s, while other areas in the Southeast, from Oklahoma and Texas to the Carolinas, may experience temperatures around 100 degrees. A heat risk map warns of dangerous heating across more than a dozen states.

The presence of humid air will cause heat index figures to range between 105 and 115 degrees. The overnight lows are also expected to remain high, raising health concerns. Meteorologist Jeff Masters of Yale Climate Connections highlighted the significance of nighttime temperatures, stating, ‘If it doesn’t cool off at night, your body doesn’t have time to readjust to all the heat.’

This heatwave follows the record-breaking temperatures recorded in July across the contiguous U.S., where the average hit 76.89 degrees Fahrenheit, exceeding previous records from July 1936.

Masters remarked on the concerning nature of breaking records set during the Dust Bowl, one of the most catastrophic events in U.S. history, suggesting the severity of the current situation.
