Jim Nantz Discusses Tony Romo’s Arrest and Future at CBS Sports

Jim Nantz, CBS Sports’ top play-by-play announcer, shared his thoughts on Tony Romo’s OWI arrest. This incident has led to a new partnership in the booth as the NFL season approaches. Nantz and Romo have been partners since the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback signed a 10-year contract with CBS to work alongside Nantz as a top NFL analyst.

During the “NFL on CBS” Media Day, Awful Announcing questioned Nantz about Romo’s status for the NFL season. Nantz replied, “I really was just laying low. I had golf events to do and I knew they had a lot to, you know, look at, sort out.” He emphasized his focus on present commitments, including communicating with Romo.

Romo was arrested by Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies for showing signs of impairment while driving in Wisconsin after a golf event. He was charged with operating while intoxicated, having an open alcohol bottle in his car, and unsafe passing.

CBS Sports President stated that Romo’s situation is “evolving” and the network is “still assessing”. “We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand,” said Berson. “We have a deep bench and everybody is stepping up.”

CBS Sports announced Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt will join Nantz in Romo’s place. Despite the situation, Nantz expressed his friendship with Romo, mentioning their long-standing relationship since 2011. Nantz stated, “I adore his family. His wife, Candice Crawford, is awesome.” He chose to keep the details of their discussion private.

Romo, in the midst of his 10-year, $180 million deal, is reportedly owed $72 million. Rumors emerged questioning his future with CBS beyond the 2026 season. Debates about his preparation have surfaced, with critics suggesting Romo hasn’t connected with Nantz as before.

Romo’s contract reportedly contains a morals clause, which CBS might use due to the arrest video. Romo’s legal team might contest this, given the millions still owed. Romo’s court date is set for Sept. 21, which coincides with CBS Sports’ first NFL broadcast featuring Nantz and Watt.
