Broncos Opt to Rest Quarterback Bo Nix in Preseason Game Against Falcons

The Denver Broncos will kick off their preseason by playing the Atlanta Falcons on Friday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, head coach Sean Payton has confirmed that star quarterback Bo Nix will not take part in the game. Payton mentioned, “Expecting our starters to play around 15 plays. Bo won’t play in this game. He’ll play next week.”

Nix underwent offseason surgery on his right ankle, an injury that sidelined him during the AFC Championship Game, leading to the Broncos’ loss. This cautious decision signifies their strategic approach as they ease into the preseason.

With Nix sidelined, a fierce battle for the backup quarterback position becomes the focus. Friday’s game offers Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger a vital opportunity to exhibit their skills as they compete for the backup role. Payton disclosed post-practice on Wednesday that each quarterback would play one half, with Stidham starting.

The backup quarterback position is crucial for the Broncos, especially after last season where Nix led the team to a 14-3 record and the AFC’s top seed. Their Super Bowl dream was cut short when Nix missed the AFC Championship due to his ankle injury. In Nix’s absence, Stidham struggled, delivering 17 completions of 31 attempts for 133 yards, one touchdown, an interception, and a lost fumble.

The possibility remains that if Nix had been fit or if Denver had a more seasoned backup, the Broncos might have advanced, potentially claiming the Super Bowl title.

This season, the Broncos return with 20 of their 22 starters, reinforcing their prospect of continuing last year’s performance.
