The Houston Texans have not won any of their first four games this season. Despite this, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes quarterback C.J. Stroud is not to blame. According to Orlovsky, Stroud has performed well enough to deserve a significant contract, akin to what top NFL quarterbacks receive.
Stroud’s Impactful Performance
During ESPN’s ‘NFL Live,’ Orlovsky stated, ‘C.J. Stroud has no business being 0-4.’ After Houston’s 34-30 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys, Stroud showcased a strong individual performance, completing 21 of 31 passes for 347 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. His start to the season has been impressive even as the team struggles.
Through four games, Stroud has accumulated 1,141 passing yards, five touchdowns, and maintained a 95.9 passer rating without any interceptions. Orlovsky evaluates Stroud beyond the team’s record, highlighting his individual play as worthy of a high-paying contract.
The Contract Dilemma
Orlovsky commented on Stroud’s contractual situation: ‘Traditionally, you wouldn’t pay a quarterback who is 0-4 the contract he’s asking for. But solely based on his play, the $50 million to $55 million is warranted.’ This places Houston in a challenging position regarding potential contract negotiations.
Quarterbacks are often evaluated based on wins and losses, especially during contract discussions. However, Stroud’s situation demonstrates why these metrics might not fully encapsulate a quarterback’s performance.
Team Performance and Defensive Issues
Despite Stroud’s efforts, Houston has scored at least 30 points twice and lost both games. They started the season with a 36-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills and fell again to Dallas 34-30. Defensive shortcomings have become apparent as Houston’s defense allowed 24 second-half points against the Cowboys, including a decisive game-winning drive.
Orlovsky noted Stroud’s play resembles his rookie season when he rapidly made a name for himself. During that campaign, he passed for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions, helping Houston clinch the AFC South championship and earning the Offensive Rookie of the Year honor.
Improved Efficiency
Stroud’s subsequent seasons weren’t as remarkable, but his efficiency appears to be resurging in 2026. Over four games, he hasn’t thrown any interceptions across 151 passing attempts. His average of 7.6 yards per attempt is the best since his rookie year.
Houston’s current record doesn’t reflect Stroud’s performance. The defense has allowed opponents to score at least 30 points twice already this year, contrasting with only once during the 2025 regular season.
Looking Forward
Houston’s offense isn’t without flaws. They scored six points in their Week 2 loss to Cincinnati and 17 against Indianapolis the following week. Still, assessing Stroud’s play solely based on their 0-4 record would overlook his capabilities.
The Texans face decisions about Stroud’s long-term future and whether he can lead the team successfully in the postseason. Orlovsky’s evaluation suggests Houston’s primary concern might not be the quarterback but making sure the team utilizes Stroud’s current performance effectively.
