Wisconsin Democrats Choose David Crowley for Governor

Wisconsin Democrats recently selected Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley over State Rep. Francesca Hong to be their gubernatorial candidate. Crowley’s nomination comes as a moderate choice in a crucial swing state, reflecting the Democratic Party’s ongoing discussion about socialism’s influence.

Despite leading in polls, Hong, who aligns with the Democratic Socialists of America, lost after key party figures, including retiring Governor Tony Evers, endorsed Crowley, dubbing him “the future of the party.” Crowley will face Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany, a House Freedom Caucus member and Trump supporter, in a closely watched November election.

Democratic Party Unity

Shortly after his nomination, Crowley and Hong appeared together at a unity breakfast. Crowley thanked Hong for her contributions and committed to unifying the party. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity within the Democratic Party, stating, “We are a big tent.” His campaign efforts are supported by Evers, whom he credits as crucial to his primary success.

Refocusing Efforts to General Election

Crowley is gearing up for a competitive general election against Tiffany. He described the upcoming contest as a clear difference between his approach and that of the “MAGA extremists.” Crowley, who made history as Milwaukee County’s first Black executive, uses his personal experiences of growing up in a working-class environment to connect with voters.

Platform and Campaign Revival

Crowley’s platform includes promoting affordable housing, enhancing education, expanding healthcare access, and investing in clean energy. After initially withdrawing from the race, he rejoined following a turn of events that he and his wife interpreted as a sign to continue. His wife reportedly saw a red cardinal after praying for guidance—an omen she associated with his renewed campaign.

Crowley’s opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is notable, as he voiced his stance against ICE partnerships. He argued that a Hong victory in the primary might have jeopardized the Democrats’ hold on the governor’s office.

Support from Democratic Leaders

Democratic leaders have united in support of Crowley, including Democratic Governors Association Chair Andy Beshear. Praise for Crowley’s record of dedication to working families and economic growth was evident. Party chair Devin Remiker conveyed the readiness of Democrats to support Crowley against Tiffany’s “extreme MAGA policies.”

In concluding remarks, Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, criticized the divisive tactics attributed to Tiffany and Trump. Randolph emphasized Crowley’s commitment to unity and problem-solving for the benefit of Wisconsin.
