President Trump’s Secret Flight Amid Security Concerns

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent were part of a decoy flight last month while President Trump secretly departed from the NATO summit using a different aircraft than the publicly identified Air Force One, according to insider sources. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accompanied President Trump on the covert flight departing from Turkey. White House aides Natalie Harp, Walt Nauta, and Dan Scavino joined President Trump on this secretive journey.

Rubio and Bessent were aware that President Trump was on another, undisclosed plane to ensure the line of succession remained intact. Several other White House aides were aboard the decoy flight, including Stephen Miller, Will Scharf, Steven Cheung, Mike Needham, Ross Worthington, and Monica Crowley. Although the plane transporting the president was meant to be designated as Air Force One, the decoy flight was publicly labeled as such.

On July 8, 2026, in Ankara, Turkey, a photo captured the alternative aircraft reportedly taken by President Trump to the U.K. Notably, the catering truck seen in the image’s foreground is not believed to be the one used for the president’s discreet transfer. On July 8, Trump announced that he would depart Ankara in the older Air Force One instead of the newer jet donated by Qatar, which he had used for the NATO summit. He stated the switch was “for old time’s sake,” allowing U.S. forces at a British refueling stop to examine the new plane. However, CBS News reported the Secret Service advised using the older aircraft for security purposes. With assistance from a catering truck, Trump moved covertly from the publicly designated Air Force One to another aircraft.

In an interview with CBS News’ Nancy Cordes, Trump revealed that the military and Secret Service decided the secret flight due to a potential threat, which he deemed unsurprising given the numerous threats against any consequential president. When asked why it was considered too dangerous for him but not the members of the press to fly on Air Force One, he responded that the plane he was on faced greater risk.

Press video footage showed Trump ascending the stairs to the old Air Force One, disappearing inside, with a catering truck visible nearby. Moments later, the truck drove to another U.S. government plane, identified as an Air Force C-32A by The Washington Post, which first disclosed the secret trip. Trump traveled from Ankara to a U.K. refueling stop on this separate aircraft, while press members and staff believed they were accompanying him on Air Force One.

While in Ankara, press reporters were instructed to keep the window shades in Air Force One’s press cabin closed. When queried about this, Trump remarked they were on a potentially dangerous flight due to the problematic individuals encountered during such trips.

In the U.K., Trump transitioned to the modern Air Force One, donated last year by Qatar and modified by the U.S. Air Force for presidential use. He spoke to the press during this flight across the Atlantic towards Washington, D.C.

According to a July statement, the Qatari-donated plane was slated for extensive security enhancements, which Trump affirmed would be “maxed out.”
