On Tuesday, The Atlantic criticized Ocasio-Cortez for laughing off past beliefs as ‘crazy’ during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.” Ocasio-Cortez made light of her earlier positions, emphasizing the need to focus on current statements from candidates.
“Woke 1 was crazy,” Ocasio-Cortez said, prompting criticism.
The Atlantic’s Idrees Kahloon noted that she’s not the only Democratic candidate attempting to distance themselves from statements like defunding the police. He warned that such tactics could backfire as socialists gain influence within the Democratic Party. Kahloon suggested that avoiding wokeness now may lead to its return in the future.
A Mother Jones article also criticized Ocasio-Cortez, suggesting her actions may be a move toward a more moderate stance ahead of a possible 2028 presidential run.
Meanwhile, CNN’s Aaron Blake pointed out the broader issue of trust in politicians. He questioned whether politicians truly believed their earlier statements or merely said them to align with prevailing trends. Blake emphasized the need for politicians to hold firm beliefs that withstand political challenges.
Progressive outlet Vox defended Ocasio-Cortez but acknowledged that politicians are stepping away from prior rhetoric. They noted that ideals like diversity and equity still resonate with Democratic voters. What has changed is the language and emphasis candidates use.
Tim Graham from NewsBusters commented that some liberal journalists are critical of Ocasio-Cortez for appearing to mock efforts to elect more Democrats. He suggested that extreme positions might succeed in strong Democratic areas but fail elsewhere.
