Representative Max Miller is facing significant challenges in his re-election bid for Ohio’s 7th District against Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter. Recent polls indicate that Poindexter holds an 8-point lead over Miller, who remains in the race despite abuse allegations and calls for his withdrawal.
According to court filings, Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, accused him of various forms of abuse, such as threatening her with a firearm and physical assault. The allegations have been widely reported and include claims that Miller threw hot water, held a gun to her head, and fractured their child’s collarbone. Miller, however, has denied all allegations, pointing out that he still retains joint custody of his child, which he argues would not be possible if the accusations were credible.
Amid these allegations, the district, which traditionally leans Republican, has become a focus for Democrats. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has added Poindexter to its “Red to Blue” program, viewing the district as a top flip opportunity.
Recent polling results show Poindexter with 54 percent of the vote compared to Miller’s 46 percent, with a margin of error of 4.8 percentage points. Another poll reported even more significant support for Poindexter, showing a 47 percent to 33 percent lead over Miller, with a margin of error of 3.94 percentage points. Analysts, including those from the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball, have reclassified the race as a toss-up due to the allegations.
Several Republicans called for Miller to exit the race, including Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno and Senator Jon Husted, who emphasized that domestic violence is unacceptable for anyone in Congress. While some called for Miller to resign to focus on his family, former President Donald Trump has chosen not to involve himself, describing the situation as “very sad.”
The Ohio race is poised to become one of the most contested in the upcoming midterms. With Republicans holding 218 seats in the House and Democrats 212, the few toss-up races could determine the overall control in the next session.
