Jeff Bezos and Consortium Acquire Stake in Liverpool FC

A consortium involving U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos has purchased a minority shareholding in Liverpool FC. This investment grants the option to acquire a controlling stake in the club, as agreed with current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

On Friday, FSG confirmed the sale of around 30% to one-third of the club, marking Bezos’ entry into sports franchise ownership. Bezos invested through the K5 Sports fund, part of 1892 Holdings, led by Amit Bhatia.

Sources close to the deal, requesting anonymity to preserve relationships, indicate a possible future acquisition of a controlling stake within the next year. However, this option does not constitute a commitment, allowing flexibility for further investment without immediate obligation.

Amit Bhatia, a former Queens Park Rangers co-owner, is joined by Eduardo Saverin’s family office and the Mittal Family Trusts in 1892 Holdings. Bhatia will assume the role of vice chairman at Liverpool, accompanied on the club’s board by Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports. Bezos will not take a seat on the board.

Despite this new investment, FSG remains the majority shareholder and retains operational control. There will be no changes to the club’s leadership or daily operations, as sources confirmed to The Athletic.

FSG emphasized the venture supports Liverpool FC’s long-term growth by combining expertise from various global sectors. The statement explained the partners will collaborate with FSG and the club’s leadership to identify opportunities that enhance objectives both on and off the pitch.

Bhatia expressed pride in investing in the esteemed Liverpool Football Club alongside FSG. He reiterated admiration for FSG’s accomplishments at Anfield and conveyed his excitement to support Liverpool’s ongoing success.
