Iran Claims Qatar Holds Pilots Amid Middle East Conflict

Iran has accused Qatar of detaining three of its pilots who have been missing since March. The Missing Persons Committee of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff announced that Qatar’s forces allegedly captured three pilots when their jets were downed. Qatar denies these claims, stating their air force shot down two Iranian bombers at the beginning of the conflict, as Iran targeted countries hosting U.S. military bases. Despite Tehran’s prior assertion of no knowledge regarding the pilots’ fate, this marks Iran’s first accusation of a regional country holding its pilots.

The statement from Iran on Saturday accuses Qatar of preventing the pilots from communicating with families or Iranian officials. Iran has requested assistance from the International Committee of the Red Cross. A spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry claimed that the pilots were shot down and remains were found, inviting Iran to review search efforts. Iran’s response remains pending.

Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates has accused Iran of attacking an ADNOC-owned tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday evening, marking the third such incident within a week. The UAE condemned these unprovoked strikes and called for their cessation. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported damage to a bulk carrier. Control of the strait became contested after the ongoing conflict began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28. Discussions between Iran and Oman about managing the strait are in progress as negotiations with the U.S. have stalled.

Deadly Israeli Strikes in Southern Lebanon

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon have led to the death of at least 11 individuals on Saturday, as reported by Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state news agency. Targets included a home in Ansar and another site in Deir al-Zahrani, claiming lives and inflicting injuries. Israel’s military stated it killed a Hezbollah battalion commander, blaming the group for hostile actions against Israeli soldiers. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office condemned the use of family members as human shields during the strikes. The incident ranks among the deadliest days since an agreement planned for Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in exchange for Hezbollah’s disarmament was announced.

Houthi Attack on Red Sea Port in Yemen

In Yemen, the Houthi rebels launched an assault on the Red Sea port of Mokha, controlled by the internationally recognized government. The attack resulted in three fatalities, including two marines, and led to the suspension of port operations. The Houthis fired six ballistic missiles, reflecting ongoing tensions and raising fears of renewed civil conflict in Yemen. Analysts suggest the escalation indicates Iran’s attempts to exert pressure on U.S. and its regional partners.
