Wildfires Ravage Europe Under Hot, Dry Conditions

Firefighters in Europe are battling fierce wildfires exacerbated by hot and dry weather. A significant fire has scorched around 30 square kilometers (12 square miles) in the High Fens nature reserve in eastern Belgium, marking one of the country’s largest wildfires in recent history. Residents in nearby communities Waimes and Bütgenbach were evacuated due to shifting winds spreading smoke.

More than 250 emergency personnel, including over 100 firefighters from Belgium and Germany, are tackling the blaze with assistance from police, military officers, and helicopters. Nicolas Lambert of Belga / AFP captured the scene in Jalhay, Belgium, where a fire truck stood amid rising smoke.

Fatalities in Greece as Fires Spread

In Greece, wildfires on the island of Salamina, near Athens, resulted in two fatalities. The fires, driven by strong winds, affected areas including the village of Peristeria and the Selini area. Evacuations occurred as firefighting and coast guard teams responded. A total of 260 firefighters, supported by aircraft and helicopters, worked to control the blaze.

Fire Brigadier General Vasileios Vathrakogiannis explained that gale-force winds rapidly expanded the fires, posing immediate threats to residential areas.

Belgium’s Most Severe Wildfire

The Belgian fire has surpassed a 2011 record-breaking event that burned approximately 14 square kilometers (5.4 square miles) in the same region. Nicolas Yernaux from the Public Service of Wallonia highlighted the difficult conditions, driven by extremely dry soil.

René Dahmen from the Department of Nature and Forest reported ongoing fire spread, with efforts concentrating on preventing the fire from advancing toward a municipal forest. Firefighting efforts have been bolstered by a Royal Netherlands Air Force helicopter conducting water drops.

Belgium’s Interior Minister Bernard Quintin communicated that the fire has been contained from spreading westward and towards Monschau, Germany.

International Assistance

Belgium has sought help through the EU’s civil protection mechanism, receiving aid from Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic in the form of water-bombing aircraft and helicopters. EU Commissioner Hadja Lahbib emphasized collaborative efforts in tackling the fires.

The High Fens’ complex mix of flora, along with recent extreme temperatures reaching 37 C (98.6 F), adds challenging dimensions to controlling the fires.

Wildfires in France and the UK

In France, the Landes region saw a forest fire under management, with no significant flare-ups overnight. The blaze, part of three major wildfires in the region this summer, required the evacuation of about 650 people.

In the UK, South Wales dealt with 14 wildfires, with military support assisting firefighting efforts. Despite a decline in temperature, drought conditions sustain a high risk of wildfires.

Germany reported progress in the Hürtgen Forest, enabling 2,000 evacuees to return home as the fire was contained with established barriers.
