Humanoid robots capable of autonomous navigation and human detection might soon work alongside federal agents at the southern border. A U.S. robotics company has already shown this technology to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.
Technology Demonstrated to DHS
Sankaet Pathak, CEO of Foundation, discussed the company’s humanoid robotics advancements with Fox News Digital. These robots have potential applications at the border. Pathak mentioned ongoing talks with several national security agencies, including the Air Force, Navy, Army, and DHS.
We’re starting to negotiate contracts and some applications for them,Pathak stated.
A DHS spokesperson confirmed no formal arrangements are currently in place with Foundation.
Role of Phantom Robots
Pathak envisions their Phantom robot performing reconnaissance and surveillance in areas challenging for humans and equipment. He questioned current methods:
If drones and watchtowers were able to solve for everything, why do we still have humans at the border?he asked.
Existing automated solutions face issues with logistics and complex terrain. Pathak believes humanoid robots can address these challenges.
The Phantom robot can identify humans, traverse uneven terrain, and map environments. The goal is for robots to autonomously handle reconnaissance, highlighting potential crossings for human officers.
Future Developments
Foundation anticipates releasing a more rugged Phantom model that will be waterproof and dustproof. Pathak noted potential applications in border tunnels, aiming to keep officers secure while robots conduct 24/7 surveillance.
He indicated readiness for pilot programs soon. Despite weather resistance being a limitation, the next-gen Phantom is designed for harsh outdoor conditions.
Potential for Armed Robots
While focusing on surveillance and reconnaissance, Foundation is open to arming robots if the federal government requests it. Pathak emphasized that robots would not make enforcement decisions independently in the near future.
The intent is detection and flagging for human decision-making.
