Europe Battles Multiple Wildfires Amidst Heat Wave

Firefighters in Belgium and Greece are contending with significant wildfires intensified by hot and dry conditions. In eastern Belgium, a fire has destroyed about 30 square kilometers in the High Fens nature reserve. This incident ranks among the worst wildfires in Belgium’s recent history.

Evacuations in Belgium

The fire prompted the evacuation of about 600 residents from Waimes and Bütgenbach in Liège province. As smoke spread, tourists were also asked to leave. A gymnasium was repurposed to shelter evacuees. Over 250 emergency personnel, including more than 100 firefighters from Belgium and Germany, are working alongside police and military officers. Helicopters from Belgium’s federal police and the Netherlands support the efforts.

“We’re dealing with something much deeper because we have very dry soil,” said Nicolas Yernaux, a spokesperson for the Public Service of Wallonia.

Authorities are focused on preventing the fire from spreading toward nearby forests. Farmers from Belgium and Germany joined efforts, using tanker trucks filled from a local lake to assist firefighters.

Deadly Blaze in Greece

In Greece, a wildfire claimed two lives on Salamina island, west of Athens. Strong winds propelled the fire, which quickly spread to residential areas. Greek firefighters evacuated around 500 beachgoers. The island, known for high wildfire risk, required the assistance of 260 firefighters, 15 ground teams, and numerous aircraft and helicopters.

International Support and Challenges

Belgium reached out for international aid under the European Union’s civil protection mechanism. Sweden provided two water-bombing planes, while the Netherlands and the Czech Republic sent helicopters. The fire was exacerbated by weeks of intense heat, with temperatures hitting 37 C (98.6 F).

Wildfires Across Europe

In France, firefighters managed a fire in Landes, which affected 17 square kilometers. In Gironde, a previous fire burned 420 square kilometers and displaced 220,000 people. UK emergency services battled 14 wildfires in South Wales with military assistance. Despite easing heat, drought continues to pose wildfire risks.

Meanwhile, in Germany, improved conditions allowed 2,000 residents to return home after significant progress against a forest fire.
