End of an Era for Zvonar Family at Lincoln-Way Football

2 hours ago 0

Senior linebacker Colton Zvonar is experiencing the final season of an era in multiple ways at Lincoln-Way. His father, Rob Zvonar, has been the football program’s only head coach. This season may be Rob’s last coaching his sons, marking a poignant close for the family. Colton, the youngest of three brothers to play under their father, reflects on this special season.

“It’s been three years and truly a lifetime in the making,” Colton said. “I’ve always known I’d be the last one, and it’s surreal this season has arrived.” The team aims for a state championship while savoring each game and moment together.

Rob Zvonar has contemplated retiring post his sons’ graduation, though no decision is final. “I haven’t thought much about it,” Rob said. “I’ll decide after the season. For now, our focus is on the current team.”

Colton, a three-year starter, stands as a key leader. The Griffins rank No. 3 in the Daily Southtown preseason list. “He’s experienced and should act as the defense’s quarterback,” Rob said of Colton, emphasizing his leadership on and off the field.

“Being a coach’s kid, he understands the game,” Rob added. “Pushing him in areas for improvement is a blessing.” Playing for his father, Colton has enjoyed the journey, despite moments of tough coaching. “The familiarity is the most fun; the hardest part is getting yelled at,” Colton explained, noting home life remains normal and great.

Colton’s knowledge shines.
Central Michigan recruit Charlie Palmer, a senior defensive back, said, “When Colton arrived as a sophomore, he already knew the defense. His dad’s lifelong leadership shows in Colton’s understanding of the game.”

Entering his senior year, Colton feels tougher. “I was soft as a freshman and sophomore. Now, I’ve grown stronger,” he shared.

Alongside Palmer and other veterans, Colton leads a team lacking previous star power, leading to an underdog status this year. “We’re scrappy and ready to fight each game,” Colton said, emphasizing team chemistry and unity.

The possibility of his father’s last season energizes everyone. “It motivates us all,” Colton stated. “Given Dad’s distinguished career, we want this year to stand out. We’ll give our best.”
