Hope can inspire us to act. Yet, amid harsh news, it often seems elusive. Over a weekend, inspiration bloomed among young public servants at the national gathering of the Young Elected Officials Network. This nonpartisan initiative, sponsored by the People For the American Way Foundation, aims to support leaders aged 40 and under in shaping communities grounded in values of freedom, fairness, and opportunity.
This network is incredibly diverse and innovative. The theme, Power in Practice: Governing for a Just Democracy, resonates deeply. As a city councilman and the youngest mayor in Ithaca, New York, I had much to learn about wielding power effectively. Back then, the Young Elected Officials Network was crucial for growth, providing a space to learn from peers and build confidence. Now, leading People For the American Way Foundation, I join more seasoned members in mentoring newcomers.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris encourages young policymakers to aggressively pursue change despite caution, highlighting the need to avoid gatekeepers. Stacey Abrams emphasizes storytelling’s role in shaping better policy outcomes. Bill Nye stresses science’s promotion, aligning with the U.S. Constitution’s aims. Alyssa Milano discusses the enduring rewards of courage in advocating for women’s rights since the “Me Too” movement.
Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-Calif), in her first congressional term, underscores the significance of studying history to enhance past achievements and avoid failures, emphasizing action over speech. As a freshman legislator working from the minority position, her achievements in passing bills are noteworthy.
Speakers affirm: true progressivism lies in making progress. Media discussions on political shifts are less relevant than actions that enhance lives. Young, idealistic individuals are stepping into public office, supported by the Young Elected Officials Network, learning effective governance. Good governance not only sustains voter trust but counters civic corruption and cynicism.
For those feeling hopeless, support these young leaders committed to fortifying communities and the nation, utilizing intellect, passion, and vigor in their roles. People For the American Way President Svante Myrick encourages this engagement for restoring hope.
