Massachusetts recently expanded abortion rights, allowing terminations up to birth. This move faces nationwide criticism. Dr. Robin Pierucci, co-chair of the American College of Pediatricians’ Pro-Life Council, expressed concern about making life-and-death decisions with limited prenatal information. She described the legislation, ironically named the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act, as ‘very disturbing.’
The law, signed by Governor Maura Healey, removes the state’s previous 24-week gestational abortion limit. Massachusetts becomes the tenth state to permit such procedures up to birth, based on a physician’s professional judgment. The law takes effect in less than 90 days.
Dr. Pierucci, who specializes in caring for newborns with severe health issues, argues that doctors are obligated to care for babies even when conditions cannot be cured. She stresses that healthcare should protect both mother and child and facilitate favorable outcomes when problems are detected.
She criticizes the practice of offering pregnancy termination based on potentially inaccurate prenatal screenings. These tests often provide probabilities rather than certainties, leading parents to irreversible decisions without fully understanding the implications. Dr. Pierucci highlights that advances in medical technology now allow survival for babies born as early as 22 weeks.
The ethical dilemmas posed by the law concern her, especially for doctors working to save premature infants born within viability windows. A baby at 24 weeks has significant developmental milestones, making the decision to terminate contentious.
For babies diagnosed with serious conditions, Dr. Pierucci supports perinatal palliative care. This approach emphasizes medical and emotional support to families, ensuring comfort for the infant during its limited time. She emphasizes that caregiving is vital, even without curing the condition.
The law’s lack of provisions for alternative approaches poses ethical issues for practitioners opposing abortion on moral grounds. These laws risk moral trauma for those whose values conflict with such practices.
Dr. Pierucci advocates against abortions regardless of gestational age, maintaining that the value of human life remains constant throughout pregnancy. She notes that early abortions do not lessen a mother’s emotional pain but simply mean earlier loss.
No response has been issued from Governor Healey’s office regarding these concerns.
