An 81-year-old man has confessed to the sexual assault and murder of an American tourist, Amy Lopez, over 30 years ago in Germany. The trial began on Tuesday in Koblenz, according to the German news agency dpa.
The court maintains the privacy of the defendant by withholding his name. He acknowledged killing 24-year-old Amy Lopez in the city of Koblenz in 1994. The prosecution accuses him of murdering her in a ‘treacherous manner for base motives’ to satisfy sexual urges.
Volker Klein, the defense lawyer, shared that the defendant has fully confessed. During the session, Judge Rupert Stehlin confirmed this admission by asking the defendant directly, to which he conceded.
The events took place on September 26, 1994, as Lopez was exploring Koblenz. Prosecutors detailed that the man, aged 49 at the time, tricked her into a secluded area of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Reports state that he then handcuffed her, sexually assaulted her, and stabbed her nine times in the chest.
Authorities revealed that Lopez was also strangled with a belt while attempting to defend herself. Her partially nude body was later found by children, displaying severe head injuries.
This cold case challenged investigators for decades. It was only after re-examining DNA traces on Lopez’s clothing that a breakthrough occurred. Approximately 1,600 samples were analyzed. In 2024, a male DNA trace led police to offer a 2,500 euro reward for new information. The case gained further attention after being featured on ‘Aktenzeichen XY,’ a crime program.
The suspect was apprehended in February at a nursing home close to Koblenz, where he has since been held in pretrial detention. The trial will span eight days, with a verdict anticipated in September.
