Francesca Hong, a socialist candidate for governor in Wisconsin, has a history of provocative online posts. One notable remark on social media described America as ‘an abundance of suffering.’ In a post from January 20, 2022, Hong expressed her desire to transform America into ‘a wealth of opportunity,’ advocating for equal rights for Black and Brown communities and the election of leaders who are not ‘racist obstructionists.’

Hong’s comments have drawn criticism, particularly regarding her thoughts on Thanksgiving. In a now-deleted post, Hong suggested canceling Thanksgiving, viewing it as a celebration of colonialism and a superspreader event that harmed indigenous populations.

Despite her remarks, Hong, a former chef and mother, is vying for the Democratic nomination for governor. She represents a growing trend of socialist candidates challenging traditional Democrats in this year’s primary elections.

Hong’s past remarks on ‘whiteness’ and interactions with White people have also stirred controversy. A 2019 post detailed her feelings of anxiety around White individuals, reflecting on an experience at a restaurant where she felt uncomfortable due to being surrounded by older White patrons.

Following the decision not to press charges in the shooting of Jacob Blake in 2020, Hong called for the abolition of police, arguing that they serve to uphold White supremacy. She advocated for defunding and abolishing police forces, seeing reform as insufficient.

Hong’s campaign has faced scrutiny over these positions, particularly her views on police and prison abolition. A spokesperson clarified that her values remain consistent, though her approach to discussing these issues might have evolved. They acknowledged the governor’s lack of authority to defund police.

“I learned then you have some hot takes, and sometimes bad takes on Twitter, and I let my feelings out into the world,” Hong remarked on her early aspirations of becoming a sports journalist, responding to queries about her previous posts.

Amid these controversies, Hong assures that her focus remains on issues voters care about. Her campaign is actively addressing these concerns, though they did not respond to queries regarding more recent posts.

The political landscape in Wisconsin reflects broader national trends, with figures like New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez working to distance themselves from more radical stances.
