Democratic strategist James Carville responded to remarks from Oliver Larkin, a socialist candidate aiming to unseat a mainstream Democratic congressman in Florida’s primary elections. Over the weekend, Larkin suggested to Fox News that Carville might need to step aside for voices with new ideas.
In response, Carville remarked on Larkin’s tendency to speak at length, a trait he attributes to all members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). He dismissed Larkin’s comments, noting that he is ‘just like every DSA member.’
Oliver Larkin, a Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 25th District, has criticized recent efforts to redraw congressional districts in the state. Larkin, known for his affiliation with the DSA, is the sole House candidate with DSA endorsement in a competitive swing district, challenging incumbent Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a more moderate Democrat.
Carville, recognized for his role in President Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 campaign, has voiced concerns about socialist candidates winning over mainstream Democrats in recent primaries. He labeled such candidacies as ‘foolish’ and out of step with political reality during an appearance on Fox News’ ‘Jesse Watters Primetime.’
In contrast, Larkin expressed confidence in the viability of democratic socialism, asserting it could triumph in any district nationwide. Supported by progressive figures like Hasan Piker, Larkin emphasized his pride in representing DSA ideals.
Rep. Jared Moskowitz, with backing from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and indirectly from pro-Israel group AIPAC, faces Larkin’s challenge in Florida’s newly formed 25th Congressional District. Larkin claims the old Democratic guard sees its influence diminishing as new leaders like himself emerge.
During a ‘Fox News Sunday’ interview, Larkin warned against excluding those with different viewpoints, suggesting the party may need the support of socialist voters in future elections.
