Markey Holds Lead in Massachusetts Democratic Senate Primary

Democratic Senate Primary Race in Massachusetts

Senator Ed Markey leads Representative Seth Moulton in two recent polls for the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary. The polls indicate Markey’s strong position as he faces a generational challenge from Moulton. An anti-incumbent sentiment has emerged within Democratic primaries, spurred by the recent loss of long-serving members of Congress to new political figures.

Age Concerns and Leadership Calls

Democrats have been dealing with concerns about the age of some top politicians. The issue intensified after former President Joe Biden faced criticism over his decision to seek a second term amid age-related concerns. A debate against President Donald Trump in June 2024 proved pivotal, eventually leading to Biden’s withdrawal and bolstering Trump’s campaign.

Despite calls for younger leadership, Markey seems well-positioned to resist Moulton’s challenge. Polls from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Suffolk University show Markey leading. Moulton has emphasized the need for new leadership in the Bay State, questioning Markey’s age.

Ideological Differences

Markey, known for his progressive stance, contrasts with Moulton, a moderate who has criticized the party’s stance on transgender rights and opposed Medicare for All. Markey’s emphasis on ideological differences shapes the race uniquely, as progressive incumbents usually face more progressive challengers.

Markey’s focus on issues like health care aligns him with voters in Massachusetts. Supporters believe a race centered on ideology, rather than age, could favor him in such a progressive state.

Polling Advantage

Markey’s consistent polling advantage over Moulton is notable. The UMass Amherst poll showed Markey ahead by 28 points, while the Suffolk poll revealed a closer race with Markey holding a 15-point lead. Markey’s approval rating remains high among Democratic primary voters.

“You need to provide a real reason as to why there needs to be a change in leadership,” said Tatishe Nteta, UMass Amherst poll director. “To date, the only reason Moulton has provided is Markey’s age and long tenure.”

Taylor Hebble, Moulton’s spokesperson, criticized public polls, citing instances where polling leads diminished unexpectedly.

Unique Race Dynamics

Older incumbent Democrats in states like New York and Colorado have lost to younger, more progressive challengers. However, Massachusetts presents different dynamics. Markey, seen as progressive, faces Moulton, less viewed as an outsider due to his congressional tenure.

Experts suggest Markey’s progressive reputation aids him, while Moulton’s stance on transgender athletes has sparked controversy.

Past Success and Current Strategy

Markey overcame a generational challenge in 2020 from Joe Kennedy III by unifying progressive voters. He garnered endorsements from prominent progressives and support from younger Democrats, enhancing his online presence.

Moulton, despite being known statewide, struggles with gaining momentum among progressives due to his moderate policies.

Poll Variability

Recent polls indicate variation, with some suggesting a closer race. A University of New Hampshire poll showed Markey leading by 6 points, while an earlier Emerson College poll showed a 5-point advantage for Markey.

Potential Path for Moulton

Despite challenges, Moulton’s path to victory hinges on mobilizing his voter base. Political experts emphasize the importance of turnout in primaries due to lower voter participation.

“Moulton could benefit from being perceived as more engaged in the final debate,” said Nteta. “It’s an uphill climb, but anything is possible.”

Primary and General Election Outlook

The primary is scheduled for September 1, 2026. Attorney John Deaton is the likely Republican nominee, though the general election is seen as less competitive. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won Massachusetts decisively in 2024, and analysts anticipate a favorable environment for Democrats.

Forecasts by the Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball classify the race as safe or solid for Democrats.
