Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham recently played in Canada for the first time, specifically in Toronto. During a game against the Toronto Tempo, she faced boos from the crowd every time she touched the ball. This reaction was linked to her comments about men in women’s locker rooms.
Despite the hostile crowd, Cunningham performed well, making all three of her 3-point attempts, contributing to the Fever’s 101-95 victory. She later expressed her appreciation for the intense atmosphere, stating, “I want to shout out the Tempo crowd and the city. We’ve had so much fun. The crowd was absolutely amazing. I think that’s what sports is all about. You’re going to get boos and you’re going to get cheers.”
Cunningham further commented on the situation, saying, “The Big Three are going to do their thing every night. Like I said, I’m just gonna come, have some fun, maybe inspire some young girls to come beat me one day.” Her remarks highlighted her approach to both criticism and the ongoing debate about gender in sports.
The controversy stemmed from previous statements she made on ESPN, where she expressed her desire to protect young girls in sports and locker rooms. “I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men,” she explained.
This sentiment sparked reactions not only from the Toronto crowd but also from the Minnesota coach, who recently wore a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt during a Lynx game.
Sophie Cunningham’s encounter with the booing crowd highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding gender and sports. Her performance under pressure demonstrated her resilience as an athlete.
