Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike has announced her decision to retire following the current season, marking the end of a highly successful career in the WNBA. Ogwumike, who is currently 36, is set to finish her 15th season, solidifying her status as one of the most accomplished players in the league’s history.
Ogwumike, an eight-time All-WNBA forward and a key player for the Los Angeles Sparks this season, shared her retirement plans in a Wednesday interview with Boardroom Talks. She reflected on her career, expressing satisfaction with her achievements.I feel very fulfilled with the 15 years that I’ve been able to play and compete at such a high level,
she said. Even though I didn’t know what kind of player I could be in this league, I never thought that I would play this long. Never thought that would be the type of player that I’d play this long.
Drafted as the No. 1 pick in 2012 out of Stanford, Ogwumike made an immediate impact, earning Rookie of the Year honors with the Sparks. She reached the pinnacle of her career in 2016 when she was named the league MVP and helped lead the team to a WNBA championship.
Former teammate Alana Beard praised Ogwumike’s leadership and influence on the court. Nneka has always led with a rare combination of strength, purpose and grace,
Beard stated. For 15 seasons, we’ve watched her give everything to this game, not only as an elite competitor but as a leader who has helped shape the league and lift up the people around her.
This season, Ogwumike made her 11th All-Star Game appearance, maintaining an average of nearly 17 points per game. Reflecting on her decision to retire, she said, It is a little bit my body: I still feel very good. But I also feel the comfort of slowing down a little bit. I just feel content. I feel very content with where I’ve left my career.
She expressed pride in her contributions to women’s basketball. I just feel like I have poured as much as I could into this game, and the last bit is this year of playing,
Ogwumike said. I’m proud of what I’ve done.
Ogwumike’s influence extends beyond her athletic accomplishments. WNBPA Executive Director Terri Carmichael Jackson commended her exceptional leadership as president of the union, highlighting a transformative collective bargaining agreement achieved during her tenure. She has served this union with a level of commitment, courage, integrity and purpose that is truly unparalleled,
Carmichael Jackson remarked. Nneka understood that leadership was not simply about having a seat at the table: It was about using that seat to move the game and the business of the game forward for every player — today and for generations to come.
