A man from Lakewood, Colorado, Patrick Barnett, 40, faces charges of first-degree murder following the death of his wife, Lindsey Barnett. Authorities disclosed that Lindsey was found with a throat wound in the couple’s home. Despite the husband’s claim that she died by suicide due to postpartum depression, police arrested him after finding inconsistencies in his story.
According to the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Patrick Barnett is charged with first-degree murder, tampering with a deceased body, and tampering with physical evidence. Lindsey Barnett, aged 37, was discovered with severe injuries on August 13. An arrest affidavit by Detective Victoria Wagner described the scene, noting Lindsey was found in the shower.
Patrick Barnett called 911 at 6:01 a.m. on the day of the incident. He claimed his wife inflicted the injuries on herself. However, police quickly questioned his account. Investigators noted significant blood traces on the right side of the bed, indicating an altercation, and a trail leading to the bathroom. Despite this, there was minimal blood in the bathroom itself.
Police observed fresh cuts and scratches on Patrick Barnett, resembling defensive wounds. Scratch marks appeared on his thumb, upper arm, chest, abdomen, and below his collarbone. These injuries suggested a possible struggle, according to investigators.
The victim’s mother stated, “Lindsey loved her children and was planning for the school year,” indicating doubts about Lindsey’s alleged suicidal intentions.
Patrick Barnett admitted to marital difficulties and Lindsey’s postpartum depression. Yet, he denied any infidelity, implying both were working on their marriage. The couple had two young children, aged three years and an infant, who were unharmed.
However, after Lindsey’s body was found, a woman identifying herself as Patrick’s girlfriend contacted police, prompting questions about his fidelity. She said she lost contact with Patrick the previous evening, which was unusual given their regular communication. When police questioned him regarding the girlfriend, he admitted to the relationship, claiming Lindsey was aware and accepting of it.
Patrick Barnett confirmed he had been seeing another woman through an online connection over their shared interest in ultimate frisbee. He maintained that his wife knew and did not object to his outside relationship.
Authorities assigned Patrick Barnett a public defender, and he is expected to appear in court in Jefferson County. A representative for the public defender’s office was unavailable for comments.
