President Donald Trump expressed frustration after a federal judge blocked his renovation plans for the Kennedy Center. Trump criticized U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, labeling him as anti-Trump. This decision also included the removal of Trump’s name from the center.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump shared his opposition to Cooper’s ruling and linked it to previous legal challenges he has faced, such as the Supreme Court’s refusal to support his tariffs. Trump did not specify whether he would continue pursuing the renovation project in court.
Following Cooper’s decision, Trump indicated he was stepping back from the renovations and prepared to transfer control of the center to Congress. The White House offered no immediate clarification on his role as the center’s board chairman.
“It’s early days yet but as and when the court’s order is implemented, including Trump’s name coming off the building, I’m optimistic that the Center will begin the long journey back.” – Norm Eisen, former White House ethics lawyer
Norm Eisen, a former White House ethics lawyer, expressed optimism that the center might soon return to its non-partisan status. Many artists previously distanced by Trump’s involvement at the Kennedy Center welcomed this change.
Trump suggested that Judge Cooper’s decision was influenced by Cooper’s wife, Amy Jeffress, due to her previous role in the Obama administration. Without presenting evidence, Trump linked Jeffress and her law firm to legal actions related to Biden and other matters involving him.
Trump criticized the current state of the Kennedy Center, describing it as neglected and infested. He advocated for the new building he envisioned.
Judge Cooper criticized the center’s board for its March 16 decision to close the venue, citing a lack of legal compliance. His ruling pauses the renovation plans and mandates the removal of Trump’s name from the center within two weeks.
Trump asserted that the board, not him, decided to add his name to the center. Upon taking office in early 2025, Trump appointed new leadership at the Kennedy Center who named him as chairman.
Judge Cooper heard cases from multiple lawsuits challenging the renovation. While Cooper ruled partly in favor of Rep. Joyce Beatty’s lawsuit challenging the project, another similar case was dismissed.
Trump mentioned Jeffress’ firm’s past involvement in E. Jean Carroll’s high-profile case against him. Carroll previously won awards for claims involving sexual abuse and defamation by Trump.
