Tensions Rise as U.S.-Canada Trade Negotiations Collapse

President Donald Trump expressed discontent with Canada following the rejection of a U.S.-Canada trade agreement. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed the proposal and promised reciprocal measures against new American tariffs.

In a public response, Trump posted on Truth Social stating, “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one.” Highlighting tariffs imposed on U.S. farmers, he declared, “No more!”

Carney criticized Trump’s new policy to impose 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian products, labeling it an economic “attack” on the country. He announced plans for retaliatory tariffs to be implemented the following month.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has frequently used the threat of tariffs against Canadian products. Recent trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington ended unsuccessfully. Carney described last-minute changes by the U.S. as “unfair, uneconomic, and questionable.”
