New York Liberty Halftime Show: Pro-Trans Messages and Activist Protests

7 hours ago 0

The New York Liberty basketball team showcased three scoreboard messages supporting transgender fans during halftime on Saturday. This occurred a day after the team refunded a woman whose paid message was deemed ineligible. Outside the Barclays Center, a large group of transgender activists protested against the ninth Sophie Cunningham rally.

The activists refused an interview with Fox News Digital and surrounded the reporter, placing flags, signs, and a sticker on his back while chanting “trans lives matter!” The group also took the glasses from a Fox News photographer filming the event, without returning them.

“Big welcome to the NY Liberty transgender fan community! So excited to be here with you all!”

The Liberty’s scoreboard displayed three messages during their 109-102 victory over the Indiana Fever. Messages included greetings to transgender fans and expressions of inclusion and love.

Julie Potter had originally paid for a custom scoreboard message thanking XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey. The Liberty altered her message and refunded her payment after deeming it ineligible.

Pro-transgender protesters chose not to speak to the media. An ambassador stated the decision was an act of solidarity. Fox News Digital sought answers about the incident involving the photographer’s glasses, but received no response.

Sophie Cunningham acknowledged the attention her comments have attracted. She noted the positive impact on fan engagement, drawing in audiences who may not have previously attended games.
